Democrats’ advantage over Republicans with Hispanic voters has fallen to a new low.

The new Telemundo and NBC News poll showing the latest statistics was conducted between September 17-26 and was taken in English by 75% of respondents, and 25% took it in Spanish. In that poll, 54% of respondents said they favored voting for Democrats, with 33% favoring Republicans.

Democratic pollster Aileen Cardona-Arroyo looked at the poll results. She stated that it is troubling that Democrats have lost much of the historical advantage they held over Republicans with this particular demographic group. Democrats enjoyed a 40-point lead over Republicans with Hispanic voters in 2012. That advantage has now snapped in half.

Democrat advantage over Republicans is slipping among Hispanic voters. The slippage has been seen slowly but surely over the years. In the same NBC News/Telemundo polls conducted in 2012, 2016, 2018, and 20202, an erosion of support for Democrats is present. The lead over Republicans began at 40 points in 2012, then 38 points in 2016, 34 points in 2018, 26 points in 2020, and now just 20 points in 2022.

The same poll for this year found Hispanic respondents reasonably evenly split on President Biden’s job performance. 51% of respondents stated that they approved of Biden’s performance, but 45% said they disapproved.

Some aspects of the poll were not all that surprising to political observers. For example, California Hispanics were far more likely to favor Democrats than Florida Hispanics. California Hispanics favored Democrats over Republicans by a 30-point margin.

Florida Hispanics only favored Democrats over Republicans by a 7-point margin. The difference is significant and goes to the heart of the issue that Hispanic voters do not universally love Democrats.

Catholic Hispanics favored Democrats by 27 points, but non-Catholic Hispanics only favored them by 15 points. On specific issues, Hispanics favored Republicans over Democrats entirely. For example, Republicans won the battle on topics such as the economy (38% of Hispanic voters say the GOP does better than Democrats on that), border security (36% to 33% favor Republicans), and crime (36%-28% favor Republicans).

There are numerous exciting findings in this poll, and it is a poll that should give Democrats some reasons for concern. They can see from these figures that a voting block they used to count on to help deliver elections can no longer count on the votes they used to provide.
