The University of Oklahoma Health System is getting a lot of press lately, and not in a good way.

Conservatives in Oklahoma point to the hospital as ground zero for experimentation with transgender surgery and hormone treatment for children. The issue is so concerning to many people in Oklahoma that the State Legislature has taken up a bill to end the university’s experiments with “certain gender medicine services,” according to the Post Millennial.

Lawmakers are just returning to the state capital in Oklahoma City now. Still, the Republican Party in the state will pass legislation to end this practice.

The new legislation will give the University of Oklahoma a choice. They can either cease performing transgender operations on minors or forfeit the $39.4 million in federal stimulus money they will otherwise receive. This loss of funding could be a significant blow to the university’s budget, and they will need to consider their options very carefully before moving in this instance.

Even as it works to pass this legislation, lawmakers wanted to clarify that other treatments, such as prescribing drugs for depression or anxiety, counseling, and other services, would still be permitted.

Currently, the University of Oklahoma website still promotes possible treatments for minors, including pausing puberty, gender-affirming hormone therapy, and assisting with legal name or gender marker changes.

The Daily Signal reported State Rep. Randy Randleman stated that funding for children’s behavioral and developmental needs is still essential to the state. However, he does not believe that the university should go as far as it has and offer hormone treatments and the like to people under 18.

Additionally, Randleman does not believe in issuing taxpayer dollars for treatments that are so highly controversial and unproven. He would like the University of Oklahoma to cease providing such treatments immediately.

Family Research Council’s senior director of government affairs, Quena Gonzalez, shared that in 2021, 21 states introduced legislation similar to what is moving forward in Oklahoma, according to the Daily Signal. This year, 13 more states have joined in on this as well. There has been significant grassroots pushback against performing these types of surgeries on people under 18. Many other states are also looking at possibly taking similar steps to ensure that such surgeries are prohibited for minors within their borders.
