Most people would think that Internal Revenue Service employees understand the importance of paying their income taxes. After all, it’s the primary purpose of the agency.

Recently, Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican representing Iowa, issued a call to “make sure the tax collectors have paid their own taxes,” according to Just the News. This call comes on the heels of the Biden administration allocating funds to hire 87,000 IRS agents through the Inflation Reduction Act.

Sen. Ernst has a valid point. People nationwide, including Republicans, are concerned that the IRS will use the new influx of agents to harass modest-income Americans.

This isn’t a new problem for the agency. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration previously found that there were hundreds of employees working for the IRS who hadn’t filed their own taxes. Some claimed they didn’t know how.

What makes the situation even worse is that some of these individuals who were fired for “willful failure to properly file their Federal tax returns” were rehired, according to The Daily Wire. In a report from 2019, 1,250 IRS employees hadn’t paid their tax bills on time or in full. Of those, hundreds were either repeat offenders or were willfully delinquent. When the agency rehired those previously terminated individuals, it turned a blind eye to a massive problem--an agency that’s internally corrupt going after taxpayers who may have made a mistake!

Sen. Ernst has a good point. How is the agency going to ignore people cheating on their taxes within the agency but go after hardworking Americans? It seems rather contradictory to give IRS agents who don’t pay taxes a slap on the wrist by firing them only to rehire them while that same agency is taking taxpayers to court and having them face time in prison for the same thing.

The guise of the Inflation Reduction Act by the Biden administration is that the new auditors would focus on corporations and the wealthy. Biden even went as far as saying that nobody making under $400,000 per year would be audited. But, like almost everything else said by this administration, Republicans have doubts about the accuracy of that statement.
