Record high gasoline prices in California head into Labor Day weekend! This soaring gas price trend made a comeback just in time for the holiday weekend despite recent drops in prices in the state and throughout the country.

The Los Angeles Times stated the following:

“The average gas price for a gallon in California and Los Angeles was $5.25 on Thursday, which is 5 cents lower than a week earlier, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California. The previous record for the start of the Labor Day weekend came last year at $4.39 a gallon in California and $4.40 for Los Angeles.”

Californians who drive electric vehicles may think they have escaped these high gas prices, but that isn’t the case either. The state has asked them to avoid charging their cars in late afternoon and early evening hours. This request is part of the state’s so-called “Flex Alert” intended to try to save energy at this time. Regulators in the state are concerned about shortages as a record heat wave has already blown through the region.

President Joe Biden claimed credit for gas prices coming down. He says his pressure on foreign countries to increase production has helped matters. He also believes tapping into the country’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve has helped ease some pain.

However, the true driving force behind lower gas prices at this time comes back to the fact that many in the country are concerned about the potential for a coming recession. If that is to pass, the country could see a significant decline in gasoline prices simply because there is less demand for gasoline during an economic recession.

We should note that even as President Biden claims credit for putting pressure on foreign countries to increase their oil output, Saudi Arabia has declined to do so.
