The investigation is concentrated on classified material that Trump brought with him to Mar-a-Lago when he left the White House. According to The New York Times, Trump delayed returning 15 boxes of material to the National Archives, which contained documents labeled as "classified national security information."

In May, federal prosecutors started a grand jury investigation to determine if classified material at Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago was mishandled. Typically, these investigations are usually for federal authorities to decide if any classified material was risked so that intelligence officials can take measures to defend sources and methods.

According to Fox News, the White House argued it did not have any notice of the raid and referred all additional questions to the Department of Justice. According to the outlet, the standard protocol would have made FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland completely aware of the raid before it took place.

Trump, who spoke at CPAC on Saturday in Dallas, and in Kenosha, Wisc. on Friday, announced that his home is "currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents."

"These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," he started. "Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before."

"After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate," he announced.
It was reported by The New York Times' that the search "appeared to be focused on material that Mr. Trump had brought with him to Mar-a-Lago," which "contained many pages of classified documents, according to a person familiar with their contents."

The New York Times reported that "Mr. Trump delayed returning 15 boxes of the material requested by officials with the National Archives for many months, only doing so when there became a threat of action being taken to retrieve them."
