Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), denied he drove under the influence after his arrest last month in California.

Paul Pelosi's lawyer, Amanda Bevins, appeared on his behalf for an arraignment at a Napa County court on Wednesday, entering a plea of not guilty to one count of driving under the influence causing injury and one count of driving with a blood alcohol content level of 0.08% or higher causing injury, Fox News reported.

Paul Pelosi, 82, hit his Porsche into a Jeep near a town in Yountville, California, on May 28, failing his sobriety test and seeming obviously unstable when arrested, according to authorities. It was later concluded that Pelosi's blood alcohol content level was 0.082%.

“His eyes [appear] red/watery, he was unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred, and he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath,” according to the criminal complaint obtained by the New York Post.

The driver of the other vehicle, who was not identified, declined medical treatment on the scene but told investigators five days later that he was experiencing "pain to his upper right arm, right shoulder, and neck."

Nancy Pelosi delivered a speech at Brown University in Rhode Island the day after the accident on May 29 and was given an honorary degree. Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Nancy Pelosi, said at the time that she would not comment "on this private matter, which occurred while she was on the East Coast."

The hearing comes a day after Nancy Pelosi made an unscheduled stop in Taiwan, becoming the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit the island since former House Speaker Newt Gingrich made the trip in 1997. Her short visit to the capital city of Taipei prompted threats from China, which opposed the trip, claiming Taiwan is Chinese territory despite the island nation of 24 million declaring itself independent.

Paul Pelosi is due back in court on Aug. 23.

Pelosi will stay free on his own recognizance and is due back in court on Aug. 23 at 9 a.m. PT for a settlement conference.

The parties could mull over the prospect of a plea agreement, continue the case or prepare for trial, Bevins said.

If convicted, Pelosi could face up to five years of probation, a minimum of five days in jail and be ordered to install an ignition interlock device in his car, according to District Attorney Allison Haley's office. Other punishments could include fines and fees and a court-ordered "drinking driver class."
