"Democratic Party leadership will literally support Republicans before they start supporting progressives," Justice Democrats annoucned in a Wednesday morning tweet that contained a report detailing spending by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) to boost the Trump-endorsed challenger to incumbent Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Mich.
The DCCC explained to Fox News on Monday that it intends to spend $425,000 on a new ad buy to boost Republican challenger John Gibbs against Meijer, who was one of the 10 House Republicans that voted to impeach former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol.

The DCCC ad says Gibbs, who has has baselessly questioned the results of the 2020 presidential election, was "handpicked by Trump to run for Congress," continuing that Gibbs is "too conservative for West Michigan."
On its face, then, the ad is framed as an attack, yet its messaging on Trump would probably appeal to Republican primary voters. As Politico notes, the spot "will also raise Gibbs' name ID in the district, especially given Gibbs' campaign has not been able to air its own TV ads."

The DCCC, which is focused on holding on to its narrow majority in the House, declined to comment.
Meijer's Grand Rapids-based district, which tilted left as an outcome of redistricting, is considered a toss up by the Cook Political Report, so it's a top target for Democrats.

"The DCCC boosting John Gibbs is clear evidence of who [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi prefers in this race," Emily Taylor, Meijer's spokesperson, announced in a statement. "We are confident that voters will see through Democrats' political games while Peter remains focused on the issues that matter most to the people he represents."

The ad buy seems to be an attempt by national Democrats to assist Gibbs in winning the primary in hopes of setting up a more favorable general election showdown for Democratic candidate Hillary Scholten, who is running unopposed in the primary.

The Justice Democrats' response to the DCCC's involvement in the race highlights the continued divide between progressives and moderates in the party that have consistently clashed over various policy points and campaign strategy each election cycle.

Moderate Democrats have, although, proceeded to largely defeat their progressive challengers in primaries across the nation this year as the party fights to minimize what many expect to be a victory for Republicans in November.
Fox News Digital reached out to the DCCC and Justice Democrats for comment yet did not get a response.
