Giuliani, a former mayor of New York City, was slapped on the back by a worker at a ShopRite grocery store while campaigning for his son Andrew Giuliani, who is pursuing the Republican nomination for governor of New York.
The force of the slap is highly debateble, with Giuliani claiming it felt like "somebody shot [him]," while others have suggested it was the equivalent of a pat on the back.
While speaking at a press conference Tuesday, Adams was asked about the incident and any potential criminal investigations. “Someone needs to remind former Mayor Giuliani that falsely reporting a crime is a crime,” he said.
"What [Giuliani] stated, there was a lot of creativity, and I think the district attorney, he has the wrong person he is investigating,” Adams said. "When you look at the video, the guy basically walked by and patted him on the back.”

In a video received and published by the New York Post, Giuliani can be seen being slapped by a worker at the ShopRite in Staten Island, and Giuliani says the worker shouted at him.
Adams suggested Giuliani exaggerated the actions of the grocery store worker.

“To falsely report a crime is a crime," Adams said. "If that video wasn’t there, then this person would have been charged with punching the former mayor. He’d have been charged with all these offenses that did not materialize.”
Daniel Gill, a 39-year-old employee of the Staten Island ShopRite, was initially arrested and charged with second-degree assault before having his charges downgraded and being released from detainment.

Giuliani responded to Adams's comments during a livestream on his Facebook page Tuesday.
"Mayor Adams is an idiot," Giuliani said. "Because I didn’t file a report, imagine that. He wants to prosecute me for filing a false report that I didn’t file. His police department filed the report. They did the investigation. They looked at the tape. He doesn’t really give a damn about victims."
Giuliani said he had just gotten out of the men’s room at the store on Veteran’s Road and was being greeted by a bunch of supporters when he was suddenly hit from behind — an incident caught on surveillance video obtained by The Post.
