While Democrats like Dick Durbin talk about taxing the Church after the ban on Nancy Pelosi's communion rites, Catholic bishops are coming together to back Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and the Church after he banned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in light of her position on abortion.

On Friday, Cordileone issued a letter stating because of Pelosi’s position on abortion and her recent calls to protect access to abortion at the federal level, she should not present herself to a priest for Communion at Mass.

An increasing number of bishops across the nation are expressing their backing, stating the ban should follow Pelosi regardless of which parish she attends.

“I have visited with the pastor at St Helena, [California] and informed him that if the Archbishop prohibited someone from receiving Holy Communion, then that restriction followed the person and that the pastor was not free to ignore it,” announced Bishop Robert Vasa of the Diocese of Santa Rosa. “The new Canon (1379 §4) makes it clear that providing sacraments to someone prohibited from receiving them [has] its own possible penalties.”

The Diocese of Oakland, California, was one of the first to back Cordileone’s ban.

Bishops from Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin have joined those in California.

Archbishop Aquila of Colorado called Cordileone’s choice “courageous, compassionate, and necessary.”

Illinois’s Bishop Paprocki wrote, “I fully support and earnestly commend Archbishop Cordileone’s action regarding Speaker Pelosi. All politicians who promote abortion should not receive Holy Communion until they have repented, repaired scandal, and been reconciled to Christ and the Church.”

Cordileone announced he has attempted to reach out to Pelosi in the past to discuss her stance on abortion, yet his letters and efforts at contact have gone unanswered. Before Friday, his most recent letter was mailed on April 7.

Meanwhile, even Pope Francis had to comment regarding the issue:

“Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi’s position on abortion has become only more extreme over the years, especially in the last few months. Just earlier this month she once again, as she has many times before, explicitly cited her Catholic faith while justifying abortion as a “choice,” this time setting herself in direct opposition to Pope Francis: “The very idea that they would be telling women the size, timing or whatever of their family, the personal nature of this is so appalling, and I say that as a devout Catholic”; “They say to me, ‘Nancy Pelosi thinks she knows more about having babies than the Pope.’ Yes I do. Are you stupid?”

“Please know that I find no pleasure whatsoever in fulfilling my pastoral duty here. Speaker Pelosi remains our sister in Christ. Her advocacy for the care of the poor and vulnerable elicits my admiration. I assure you that my action here is purely pastoral, not political. I have been very clear in my words and actions about this,” he wrote.
