Two Republican senators are calling on President Biden to remove the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) over the agency's "abysmal lack of competence" during the coronavirus pandemic.

Sens. Steve Daines, R-Mont., and Tom Cotton, R-Ark., sent a letter, exclusively reviewed by Fox News Digital, to Biden Friday declaring that the U.S. must leave the "corrupt and inept" organization, because of the agency's failures throughout the coronavirus pandemic. WHO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health.

The senators take issue with the Biden administration's plan to back amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) from Jan. 18, which they say would increase the WHO's power at the expense of the U.S. and its allies.

"The WHO has demonstrated an abysmal lack of competence throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, which has destroyed the organization’s credibility and undermined the public’s confidence in it," write the senators.

They cite the organization's false allegation in January 2020 that the COVID-19 virus was not spread by human-to-human transmission and the WHO director general's endorsement of China's handling of the pandemic.

The WHO has come under fire from members of Congress over the last two years. Lawmakers have called the organization a "puppet" for the Chinese Communist Party and have blamed WHO for working to conceal COVID-19 origins.

Last month, House Republicans dug in on their investigation of COVID-19 origins with a new round of letters seeking transparency and responsibility from the Biden administration and scientists.

The contents of the proposed amendments were not made public until April 12 2022,. The existing WHO regulations provide for an 18-month grace period throughout which a country may withdraw its “yes” vote for amendments. Nevertheless, the currently suggested amendments would reduce that opportunity to six months. If the amendments are passed, a majority of the nations could change their individual votes and reverse the approval in the next months.

“Covid-19: Make It the Last Pandemic,” a report published by the United Nations in May 2021, claims that the “pandemic” would have been prevented if the WHO had been given more global authority. The report declared, “In its current form, the WHO does not possess such powers …To move on with the treaty, WHO therefore needs to be empowered — financially, and politically… The treaty should possess an adaptable incentive regime, [including] sanctions such as public reprimands, economic sanctions, or denial of benefits.”

Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver stated, “The Biden administration has now set America up to cede U.S. sovereignty concerning the health of Americans to the World Health Organization. The proposed amendments would give the WHO global jurisdiction over the United States including the authority to declare national emergencies. We have already seen the lawless abuse of power under Joe Biden by the Centers for Disease Control, which the courts have fortunately blocked. Americans would have very little recourse against the WHO. America must not give up its sovereignty to the WHO.”
