According to Axios, President Joe Biden has started directing White House aides to shift gears and focus on the approaching midterm elections and in their attempts to emphasize Democrats’ core election message and the Administration’s signature programs.

The report arrives a day after the New York Times announced that Biden’s legal team is preparing to defend against the case of an impeachment if Republicans gain command of Congress in December.

Republicans have publicly announced they are ready to impeach Biden and investigate Hunter Biden’s dealings and a trove of files that reportedly came from a laptop Hunter Biden left in a computer repair shop.

White House officials will probably highlight Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill and $1.9 trillion in Coronavirus relief funds, according to Axios.

Biden has begun to denounce Republicans for promoting “ultra-MAGA” policies publicly.

“President Biden has always said don’t compare me to the almighty, compare me to the alternative,” stated Michael Gwin, a White House spokesman.

“The President isn’t going to shy away from underscoring the contrast between congressional Republicans and the work he and his Administration are doing to lower prices and make our communities safer and stronger.”

In the meantime, Biden’s approach risks undercutting one of his key 2020 selling points to the American public — that a centrist Democrat could transcend the partisan fight in Washington and discover common ground with Republicans.

The President has been casting about for a Trump replacement all year and has been hesitant to directly denounce Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a former colleague.

Yet, over the last few months, Biden has become more comfortable with the idea of running against Republicans — instead of attempting to appeal to them.

In Seattle in April, Biden attacked the GOP on a trip mixing policy and politics. “This ain’t your father’s Republican Party,” he announced, standing behind a lectern emblazoned with the presidential seal.

In early May, he trotted out the “ultra-MAGA” line, tapping into sentiment wary of Trump’s Make America Great Again slogan.

Biden took it up a level in Chicago last week: “Look at my predecessor, the great MAGA king — the deficit increased every single year he was President."

As the Washington Post notes, many Republicans embrace the “ultra-MAGA” mantle.

On Friday, the White House encouraged congressional allies, in talking points obtained by Axios, to boost Biden’s message that Republicans didn’t back his police funding in the COVID-19 relief bill.
