After a spate of deadly gun violence, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot became the second Midwestern official to take a page from the martial law books of many dictators and enacted a curfew for unaccompanied minors this weekend.

The curfew will ban unaccompanied minors from a popular city park on weekend evenings, an endeavor to combat violence after Sandell Holliday, a 16-year-old boy, was fatally shot near a popular tourist attraction - a sculpture called “The Bean” - in downtown Chicago’s Millennium Park.

Milwaukee executed a similar measure for anyone under the age of 21 Saturday and Sunday night after three people were killed and 24 were injured in nine shootings across the city.

Officials announced Sunday afternoon that minors would not be allowed in Millennium Park after 6 pm Thursday through Sunday without an adult. Officials did not comment on how the curfew will be implemented, though they did say that people “going to work, government officials, social service workers, and credentialed members of the press acting in their official capacity” will be exempt from the order.

Police said Holliday was shot in the chest at about 7:30 pm Saturday near the giant, mirrored structure. He was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he was declared dead, police said.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said Sunday afternoon that a 17-year-old was arrested after the shooting, and a weapon was found on the teen. The teen, who has not been revealed, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Another teen, who was supposedly armed with a ghost gun - a weapon that does not have a serial number and can’t be traced - was arrested for the shooting, police said.

In total, 26 minors and five adults were arrested during the gathering in the park on Saturday evening. A total of eight guns were confiscated and five gun arrests were made, police said.

“This senseless loss of life is utterly unacceptable,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement. “Tonight, a mother is grief-stricken, mourning the loss of her child and searching for answers.”

She said new steps would be taken “to help prevent events like this from happening in the future,” adding that details will be provided later. Her news release referred to young people coming to the downtown area, though it didn’t elaborate.

“We must also have zero tolerance for young people carrying firearms or settling petty disputes with acts of violence,’ the mayor's statement said. “We all must condemn this behavior in the strongest terms possible.”

Hundreds of people were at the park earlier Saturday as part of demonstrations around the U.S. against the recently leaked draft opinion that suggests the Supreme Court is prepared to overturn the nationwide right to abortion.
