According to the Portland Press Herald, the red, white, and blue message written on the sidewalk stated: “Susie, please, Mainers want WHPA —–> vote yes, clean up your mess.” The dot in the “I” of Maine had been replaced with the drawing of a uterus and Fallopian tubes.”
Police replied to Collins’ Bangor, Maine residence right after 9 pm and filed a report, declaring they did a check and didn’t find anyone on the property.
The police deemed the display was not a crime, and Public Works employees came to wash the message away.

The message was written ahead of the anticipated vote on the WHPA, which Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced would take place on Wednesday.
The legislation looks to codify abortion rights into law and followed a leaked draft opinion document from the Supreme Court indicating that a majority of the justices would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The display at Collins’ house was notably less eventful than those seen outside the homes of Supreme Court Justices over the weekend. On Saturday, protestors descended upon the Maryland homes of Justices Brett Kavanaugh and John Roberts, holding a “candlelight vigil for Roe.”

On Monday, protestors held a similar event outside the home of Justice Samuel Alito in Virginia.
According to Forbes, Collins has announced that she will not vote in support of the WHPA, telling reporters that the legislation is too broad.

Bangor police called the Department of Public Works to wash the message away, Betters said. The message was not visible on Monday afternoon.
Collins voted to confirm Kavanaugh in 2018 after she announced he assured her that he respected legal precedents and would not let his personal views on abortion cloud his decisions. She stated last week that Kavanaugh and Gorsuch’s backing of the court’s draft opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito, which is not a final decision, was “inconsistent” with their previous statements to her.

“We are grateful to the Bangor police officers and the City public works employee who responded to the defacement of public property in front of our home,” Collins said.
Former Bangor city solicitor Paul Nicklas stated in 2020 that the city doesn’t prohibit chalking or erasing chalk on city sidewalks after Bangor police cited a man who erased a local evangelical church’s chalk messages group had written in West Market and Pickering squares in downtown Bangor.
