Sunday, the U.S. Marshals Service announced that it is offering up to $10,000 for any information regarding an escaped inmate as well as a “missing and endangered” correctional officer who disappeared Friday after the two exited a jail in north Alabama.

Casey Cole White, 38, had been detained on a capital murder charge in the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Florence, Alabama, roughly 75 miles (121 kilometers) west of Huntsville.

The inmate and assistant director of corrections Vicky White, 56, left the Lauderdale County Detention Center on Friday morning to attend a nearby courthouse, the sheriff's office noted in a Saturday Facebook post. Investigators stated the pair are not related.

“Casey White is believed to be a serious threat to the corrections officer and the public,” the U.S. marshal for northern Alabama, Marty Keely, said in a statement Sunday. While in state prison for other crimes in 2020, Casey confessed to the 2015 stabbing to death of Connie Ridgeway, WHNT-TV reported.

Vicky White has been with the department for the entirety of 16 years. At a news conference Friday, Singleton conveyed she was armed when she left the jail with the inmate in tow, as the two headed to the courthouse for what she reported was a mental health evaluation for Casey White. She was alone with the inmate, which the sheriff asserted violated department policy.

“Our policy is for any inmate with those kinds of charges to have two sworn deputies escort them. And that did not happen,” Singleton declared. Singleton also revealed that no mental health evaluation was scheduled for the inmate at the courthouse.

The vehicle in which the officer and the inmate were when they left the detention center was detected at a nearby shopping center parking lot, according to the sheriff’s office.

Vicky White also informed co-workers she had a doctor’s appointment scheduled, which was confirmed. Still, the office said the deputy never showed up, according to the sheriff. Officials exclaimed that no one realized the two were missing until nearly six hours after they left the jail. Deputies attempted to contact Vicky White, but her phone repeatedly went to voicemail.

Singleton reported his department was “aggressively investigating” the incident and would be looking into previous interactions between the pair to “see if something else was going on.” Singleton told news outlets that Vicky White had turned in her retirement papers the day before she went missing. Vicky had been with the Sheriff's Department for 25 years.

'Knowing the inmate, I think she's in danger, whatever the circumstances,' Lauderdale Sheriff Rick Singleton told WBRC. 'He was in jail for capital murder and he had nothing to lose.

The sheriff told AL.com on Sunday that there were no new developments in the investigation. The Associated Press contacted the sheriff’s office, but a phone message there informed them the office was closed Sunday.

The Marshals Service reported that Casey is 6 feet, 9 inches (2.06 meters) tall and weighs about 260 pounds (118 kilograms). He has brown hair and hazel eyes.

The Marshals Service said people with information about Casey White’s location or Vicky White’s disappearance can call the service at 1-800-336-0102. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through the U.S. Marshals Tip App.

As investigators zero in on 'bogus claims' she made before picking him up from jail, the family of the official who disappeared with a murder inmate on Friday says she was a 'sweet person' who wouldn't have helped a 'killer' escape.
