On Wednesday night, all 50 Republican senators and 2 Democratic senators voted against modifying the filibuster rule.
According to the New York Post, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tried to change the rule after Republicans utilized the filibuster to block sweeping voting-rights legislation pushed by the Democrats.
The new rule would have enabled Democrats to wait through a filibuster and pass the voting legislation with a simple majority. Now, the rules require 60 votes to end a filibuster, a figure difficult to reach in an evenly divided Senate.

Manchin stated Wednesday, "Allowing one party to exert complete control in the Senate with only a simple majority will only pour fuel on the fire of political whiplash and dysfunction that is tearing this nation apart. "It's time that we do the hard work to forge difficult compromises that can stand the test of time," Manchin said.
