Despite record rapes, muggings and people deaths, New York City Mayor Eric Adams claimed that the NYC subway system was secure after another person died after being pushed onto the tracks.

Adams attempted to convince New Yorkers that there was not a threat in the subway and that the concerns they have are just a "perception of fear." Many have been disappointed in the new Mayor who was a former police officer and campaigned on a Giuliani style 'Law & Order' platform - only to endorse a district attorney who vowed to be soft on crime and play a smoke and mirror game with city residents over actual crime statistics.

“New Yorkers are safe on the subway system,” Adams said during a press conference. “I think it’s about 1.7% of the crimes in New York City that occur on the subway system. Think about that for a moment. What we must do is remove the perception of fear." What Adams did not mention are the scores of crimes committed on the subway system that was not reported - and the fact that because of the dangers, the ridership on America's largest public transportation network is down considerably. "He fooled us all," said Alfred Ramirez who campaigned for the mayor during the democratic primary, "he gave us the impression he would clean the city up, and instead he is making excuses and trying to tell us what we see in front of our faces is not actually there."

Police reported that a homeless man pushed 40-year-old Michelle Alyssa Go in front of a moving train in Times Square on Saturday morning, killing her. A suspect, 61-year-old Simon Martial, was later captured. Martial said that he pushed the woman while being escorted out of a police building on Saturday, according to the New York Post. Martial said that he pushed Go because he was "God" and because the woman took his jacket. He is currently facing murder charges.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell explained the incident as a "senseless, absolutely senseless act of violence." Sewell explained the violent incident as "unprovoked," saying that the pair had not interacted before the incident.

Adams noted in the press conference that "cases like this aggravate the perception of fear."

“When you see homeless individuals with mental health issues not being attended to and given the proper services, that adds to the perception of fear,” Adams added.

While Adams attempted to dissuade people from being scared of New York's metro system, others claim there is still danger. John Samuelsen, president of the Transport Workers Union, told the New York Post that "[Adams] inherited the problem, no doubt. But it’s objectively real that transit workers are in danger every day when they go to work.”

On Saturday morning, Ms. Go left her apartment on the Upper West Side and was about to step onto a subway in Times Square when a 61-year-old man pushed her from behind, shoving her to her death in front of a southbound R train.

A witness said that screams reverberated through the station just after 9:30 a.m., and the killing shocked a city already on edge nearly two years into a pandemic. Subway use is half what it was before March 2020, and riders who have pleaded for help from elected officials complain regularly about encounters with people who appear homeless and mentally ill.
