Newly-elected New York City Mayor Eric Adams applauded his city's vaccine mandate, enacted by his predecessor Bill de Blasio, which still stands after Biden's vaccine mandate for large workplaces was struck down by the Supreme Court.

"The Supreme Court may not want to put the health and safety of Americans first but New York City does," Adams tweeted on Friday after the Supreme Court ruled that Biden's far-reaching vaccine mandate is not constitutional.

"Yesterday’s ruling doesn’t have any effect on our private sector vaccine mandate. It’s still in effect. As always, cities must lead when some in Washington won’t," Adams went on.

Adams has been called a "moderate" Democrat by some, yet he is firmly in favor of mask and vaccine mandates. So much so, the first thing he did as mayor was to extend the city's "vaccine passport" requirements. These mandates are made by executive order and have not been legislatively considered by City Council.

Suits have been raised against the City's mandate. One such lawsuit, filed early this year, with the plaintiff listed as Staten Island real estate firm Cornerstone Realty, contends that they are being forced to fire workers who are not vaccinated and that the mandate has no provision for businesses to appeal it. That suit asserts that "This case is not about vaccines, but about an employer’s right to be heard."

Since Aug 2021, New Yorkers have been required to show a photo ID and proof of vaccination on-demand to participate in any sort of public life in their city. When entering restaurants, gyms, museums, and other public spaces, all people ages 5 and over must show proof of vaccination or be denied entry. They are also required to mask.

Since Dec 2021, children as young as five are required to get vaccinated in order to be permitted to engage in public life and the vaccine mandate has been extended to all private workplaces, offering no exceptions.

There has been no small amount of objections to the new measures, which are considered to be overly draconian by many.

These restrictions have all been enacted as emergency measures and have been kept in place without any input whatsoever from the City Council, or, indeed anybody else except for Adams, and his predecessor, or unelected Governor Kathy Hochul, who took over as Andrew Cuomo was forced from office amid scandals.
