Jack Dorsey distinguishes out even among Silicon Valley's strange geniuses for his quirks. Nick Bilton, author of "Hatching Twitter," described Dorsey's dress taste as "almost like one of those Russian dolls, with a new exterior shell put on every couple of years."

"He had a moment where he wore these strange Dior Homme [reverse collar] shirts." He's currently going through a boho period, thanks to [designer] Rick Owens. He was formerly infatuated with wabi-sabi, a strange and eccentric Japanese design philosophy. There have been A-line skirts and jeans."

The announcement that Dorsey, a former punk rocker, NYU dropout, licensed masseur, and would-be fashion designer, would be stepping down as CEO of Twitter, the business he co-founded in 2006, stunned the IT world on Monday.

“Nobody expected Jack to reach the heights that he did,” said a former employee. “He used to be a semi-homeless, hippie, software developer who couch-surfed.

“In many ways he is the anti-CEO. Those guys are douchey dudes and he is his own person. He’s just a different guy. Whoever takes Jack’s place at Twitter will be less distinctive than Jack.” (Twitter CTO Parag Agrawal will take the lead.)

Shareholders, on the other hand, are overjoyed. Twitter shares jumped more than 11% after CNBC announced the 45-year-resignation. old's Maybe they were pleased not to have to deal with any more rumors like musician Azealia Banks' assertion that Dorsey sent her pieces of his Rip Van Winkle-like beard so she could make a protective amulet out of them. Banks' Twitter tweet about it has now been deleted, and Dorsey has disputed it. Meanwhile, the beard has its own witty Twitter account.

This isn’t the first time Dorsey has stepped down, either. He originally served as CEO for the first 18 months of Twitter’s existence, from April 2007 until October 2008, when he quit to be replaced by the more buttoned-up Evan Williams.

Dorsey's sensibilities had transformed from nerdy start-up founder — who once covered his nose ring with a Band-Aid when a manager requested him to get rid of it — to full-on bohemian by the time he retook the role in 2015.

Dorsey brought excellent things to Twitter, according to the former employee, but the computer wizard has too many diversions right now to keep him focused. After all, this is a man who claims to spend two hours a day meditating.

Dorsey only discovered out after a girl encouraged him to message her rather than phone her, according to "Hatching Twitter." Meanwhile, his preferred method of wooing females was to present them with origami cranes that he had made himself.

"It's not the money at all," the former Twitter employee feels these females are drawn to Dorsey for reasons other than his billions. He's genuinely intriguing. That distinguishes him from, say, Mark Zuckerberg."

According to Forbes, Dorsey is worth $11 billion and grew up in St. Louis, where his mother was a homemaker and his father was an engineer. He now lives in a glass mansion overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. He's claimed to eat water, salt, and lemon for breakfast and walk 75 minutes each day from his house to his office. However, he is said to prefer working at home in infrared light, which is said to reduce stress. He claims to only eat one meal a day and to fast on weekends.

According to the Times of London, he also supports LSD microdosing.

Bilton is skeptical of Dorsey's assertion that he spends 45 minutes every night bouncing from a 220-degree sauna to ice-cold water and back to the sauna.

“The world record for a sauna is only six degrees more than what he says he does it at,” Dorsey's favorite temperature, which is higher than the boiling point, was described by Bilton... “And a Russian died from it.”

Dorsey "is a bohemian who ended up a millionaire by mistake and is continuing the route he's always been on," according to Adam Fisher, author of "Valley of Genius."

However, things don't always go as to plan. Dorsey made headlines in 2019 for pledging to spend three to six months in Africa, only to later admit it was a mistake. He also received heat for visiting India and waving a poster that claimed “Smash Brahminical patriarchy.”

He described Myanmar as "an extraordinarily beautiful nation... [where] people are full of joy and the food is excellent" after visiting the country on a meditation retreat. "You omit to say you're in a country where the military has perpetrated mass executions & mass rape, driving hundreds of thousands to escape, in one of today's largest humanitarian crises..." wrote Andrew Stroehlein, the European media director of Human Rights Watch, on Twitter.

Despite this, Bilton believes the billionaire's laissez-faire attitude — which includes yachting trips with Jay-Z and Beyonce — is more deliberate than it appears. "Dorsey genuinely cares about what people say," Bilton remarked. "He wants them to believe that, like Steve Jobs, he will leave a crazed legacy and make a mark in the universe." "The verdict is still pending."
