The Clinton campaign and Democratic Party operators paid for these baseless charges, then spread the lies to government agencies and major media organizations. Clinton herself often perpetuated a conspiracy theory that she almost undoubtedly knew was false. A lawyer at the FBI doctored an email and applied it as the basis for a sworn statement to spy on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, thus overlooking the fact that the underlying evidence was a partisan document and Obama officials unmasked members of the opposition party throughout an election.
