Liberal talk show host Bill Maher showed his disinterest in critical race theory, stating he was "out" if it meant segregating children by race.

Throughout a panel discussion with Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware and Atlantic staff writer Caitlin Flanagan, Maher discussed the Virginia Gubernatorial race and former Gov. Terry McAuliffe's remarks about schools. In a slight aside, Maher mentioned critical race theory and its promotion.

Maher announced he was "for it" if authors like Toni Morrison were taught though not if it meant changing how teachers treated children.

"If that's what critical race theory means," Maher stated. "If it means separating 5-year-olds by race and telling some, 'You're oppressors,' and the others, 'You're oppressed,' and giving up on a colorblind society and resegregation and racism is the essence of America — then I'm out."

"We have to define what CRT means," Maher went on.

Flanagan agreed.

"Of course you can teach it," she announced. "What you cannot do is rewrite curriculum and pull kids out by race."

Flanagan also came down hard on the vaccine mandates that may cost people their jobs if refused. "We shouldn't be losing his job, the guy who saves lives." Maher said when he saw people walking outside by themselves with a mask, he thinks it's "so stupid. It's an amulet, to ward away evil spirits."

McAuliffe's comments regarding education have drawn criticism. During a Tuesday debate in late September, McAuliffe announced that he did not want to let parents influence what schools teach.

"I'm not going to let parents come into schools and actually take books out and make their own decision," McAuliffe stated. "I don't think parents should be telling schools what they should teach."

McAuliffe declined to define critical race theory, stating in an interview it was "racist" and a "dog whistle." McAuliffe has also claimed the curriculum is not taught in Virginia and that discussing it was "wasting precious viewers' time."

To conclude his show, Maher attacked the way words with clear parameters have suddenly expanded their reach. "White Supremacist – it shouldn't apply to getting rid of the SAT test," he stated. The idea of who's a hero also bothered him. Maher recalled recently saying to the guy collecting carts outside of Ralphs, "Thank you for your service."

Word inflation has also infiltrated the concept of shaming. "When I reported the statistic that 78 percent of Covid cases were overweight, that's not fat-shaming, it's fat 'splainin'," Maher announced. "You can try to change reality by changing the words, but you can't. It's Orwellian, and Orwell never ends well."
