Paris Hilton has recently raised a discussion aiming to advocate for the necessity of the reforms for children in congregate care. 40-year-old Hilton based her statements on her own traumatic experiences.

Paris Hilton is a well-known entrepreneur and aristocrat who has previously confessed once enduring verbal, emotional, and physical abuse at Provo Canyon School, which is a Utah boarding school for troubled teens. Thus, now the woman is urging for federal-level reform in an emotional and sincere Washington Post essay that was published on Monday.

In the publication, Paris discussed her personal experience from when she was sent to Provo by her parents, who ‘fell for the misleading marketing of the ‘troubled teen industry.’’ She said:

"I was awakened one night by two men with handcuffs. They asked if I wanted to go 'the easy way or the hard way' before carrying me from my home as I screamed for help. I had no idea why or where I was being taken against my will. I soon learned I was being sent to hell."

Paris Hilton went to Provo at 17 and stayed there for 11 months. During her stay at that boarding school, according to her statement, she endured psychological and physical abuse from staff members. She recalls being slapped, choked and deprived of sleep.

The Provo institution has different owners, and the administration reported to the press that it is not willing to give any comments on the subject since the mentioned episode took place before the change of management. Per the school’s website, the former owners sold the establishment back in 2000.

As Paris shared more of her past in the essay, writing: "I was called vulgar names and forced to take medication without a diagnosis. At one Utah facility, I was locked in solitary confinement in a room where the walls were covered in scratch marks and bloodstains."

Hilton claims that even though she suffered greatly, her parents were unaware of what happened since children were prohibited from communicating with the outside world, which is a tactic that intentionally created ‘wedges between parents and children by telling parents not to believe their kids.’

As stated in the 2008 Government Accountability Office report, it found ‘ineffective management and operating practices.’ Peris responded that there are still ‘no federal reporting requirements governing congregate-care facilities’ and asked Congress and the Biden administration to take action by providing sufficient funding and requiring states to ‘prove that children's basic rights are being protected.’ She wrote:

"Congress and President Biden need to enact a basic federal 'bill of rights' for youths in congregate care. Every child placed in these facilities should have a right to a safe, humane environment, free from threats and practices of solitary confinement and physical or chemical restraint at the whim of staff. Had such rights existed and been enforced, I and countless other survivors could have been spared the abuse and trauma that have haunted us into adulthood… It's a basic human rights issue that requires immediate action."
