The Biden administration is reportedly considering the possibility of setting up an emergency direct hotline between the US and China, a new report indicates.

Citing a US official and another source familiar with early conversations about the device, CNN reported Wednesday that the administration was pursuing an idea similar to that of the “red telephone” set up between the US and the Soviet Union at the time of the Cold War.

The established line, known also as Moscow-Washington hotline, was put in in 1963 under President John F. Kennedy.

At the time, it allowed for a secure dialogue between the Pentagon and the Kremlin in an effort to avoid nuclear war between the feuding superpowers.

A Biden-era “red telephone” is still in its conceptual phase, according to the network, and has not been formally raised with the Chinese.

If implemented, the phone would be folded into what the network described as “a broader effort to reduce the risk of conflict between the US and China.”

The hotline, as per the report, would allow the US commander-in-chief to immediately reach Chinese President Xi Jinping through encrypted phone calls or messages.

It would also be used by top officials on Biden’s national security team, as well as their Chinese counterparts.

As an example, the network explained that “urgent information could be shared about sudden military movements or warning messages sent about cyber hacks.”

Reps for the president did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the report.

China, a nation that has faced a wave of international scrutiny over the past few years relating to its activities in dismantling democracy in Hong Kong and its refusal to accept responsibility for negligence and a lack of transparency at the onset of the coronavirus outbreak, has not let global tensions stop its mass internment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang province or its aggressive behavior in the South China Sea.

As the world’s second-largest economy behind the US, China also continues to use unfair trade practices and steal intellectual property.

In a speech marking the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party earlier this month, Xi issued a stark warning to his country’s adversaries, warning that any country that attempted to “bully” China would “face broken heads and bloodshed.”

The Chinese leader also defiantly predicted that his country would one day have the world’s greatest fighting force, of which he pledged the CCP would remain in control.

“The Chinese people will absolutely not allow any foreign force to bully, oppress or enslave us and anyone who attempts to do so will face broken heads and bloodshed in front of the iron Great Wall of the 1.4 billion Chinese people,” he told those celebrating near Tiananmen Square, which was filled with thousands of people waving Chinese flags and singing patriotic songs.
