Apparently, much of the rest of the world finds itself in similar circumstances, as people across the globe have lost trust in the traditional media institutions that have informed and shaped societies for decades.
Traditional legacy media has been suffering lately, losing ratings, and, consequently, losing advertiser funding, which have been massively shifting to entities such as Facebook and Google.
Axios, the outlet who commissions this "trust barometer" poll on a yearly basis, commented on the poll results, "News organizations have historically relied mainly on advertising income, and as those dollars flow increasingly to Google and Facebook, that has created institutional weakness that shows up in trust data."

The poll itself asked respondents if they agreed with the following two statements:
• "Journalists and reporters are purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false or gross exaggerations."
• "Most news organizations are more concerned with supporting an ideology or political position than with informing the public."

To the first question, 56 percent of Americans responded negatively. Secondly, 58 percent did not agree.
As far as social media goes, the statistics show even less trust. A mere 27 percent of Americans trust what they see on social media.

CNN, for example, falls below a million average viewers during prime time hours, while Fox News dominated ratings as the only cable TV channel with more than 2 million viewers.

In the newly released Nielsen ratings for the month of May, Fox dominated above every other cable news channel. Fox News has 14 programs with higher ratings than CNN's top rated show. Fox was the only channel with more than 2 million viewers in the 8pm - 11pm slot. MSNBC finished second with an average of 1.5 million and TNT, ESPN and HGTV rounded out the top five.

While Fox News surges, CNN saw two thirds of viewers leave from their three most popular programs: Anderson Cooper, Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon. CNN's total day viewers is down more than 70% from January. Fox News also dominates total day viewers with 1.2 million viewers while No. 2 MSNBC settled for only 835,000.

"Tucker Carlson Tonight" again finished as the most-watched show in cable news, averaging 2.9 million viewers. "Hannity" averaged 2.6 million viewers in second, and Fox News’ "The Five" averaged slightly below to finish third despite airing in the typically less watched 5 p.m. ET time slot.
"Fox & Friends" was also the most-watched cable morning show, mercifully crushing CNN’s "New Day" and MSNBC’s "Morning Joe." "New Day" had its worst month in history while "Morning Joe" had its worst month since 2015.
