A California police officer lost his life, and another was injured after being shot while attempting to execute a search warrant earlier this week.

The two officers, who are from the San Luis Obispo Police Department, were shot on Monday evening at an apartment in the area of South Higuera St. and Margarita Ave, the department revealed in a statement. The apartment complex currently remains off-limits to the public as investigators continue to process the scene of the crime and speak with witnesses.

Neither of the victims' names have been released at this time, though the injured officer is in stable condition after being transported to the hospital.

The suspected shooter was killed by police though it has yet to be announced whether the alleged shooter was the person being served with a warrant.

It is unclear how the incident began other than, at some point, the suspect opened fire on the two San Luis Obispo Police Department officers while they were serving a search warrant, according to ABC News’ Los Angeles station KABC. One San Luis Obispo officer was killed in the shootout. A second officer was injured and transported to an area hospital where the officer is in stable condition and expected to survive.

“This is a tragedy beyond measure for all of those who serve and care about our community,” Derek Johnson, the San Luis Obispo city manager, said, adding, “Our deepest condolences go out to the family. We are devastated by this loss."

“Late this afternoon, while serving a search warrant in the area of South Higuera St. and Margarita Ave., 2 officers from the City of San Luis Obispo Police Department were shot," the police department wrote on Twitter. "The suspect is deceased and there is no threat to public safety at this time.”

Victoria Torres, 21, a neighbor, recalled hearing “a very loud knocking,” which didn’t alarm her “until I heard the gunshots,” she said to the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

Torres noted looking out her window and saw a police cruiser. When she looked out a different window, she saw a man carrying a “big gun” who began shooting at officers.

Torres went back upstairs to hide and call 911. “I was pretty startled and frightened,” she said. “I just hid. I looked out the window again when it got quiet. Because I wasn’t sure what happened.”

Monica Rochte, 31, told the Tribune that she heard the police banging on an apartment door and saying: “We’re going to come in. We know you’re in there.”

Rochte said there was yelling and then a bang that she thought might be police knocking down the door, followed by a single shot.

Rochte then heard police yell: “He has a gun!” followed by a series of 15 to 20 shots, she said.

Authorities insist there is no threat to public safety at this time and have asked people to avoid the area while they conduct their investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
