Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is leading the polls for 2024, but the shock is that former Vice President Mike Pence is tied with DeSantis among likely supporters of former President Donald Trump in a survey about who would win a hypothetical 2024 GOP primary. However, they both still come in a significant distance behind former President Trump, among potential voters.

“If President Trump chose not to run, it’s clear his supporters are already gravitating towards VP Mike Pence, FL. Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Ted Cruz,” GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio commented about the survey he conducted, reports Politico.

The findings of the poll, without Trump being included, show the following.

DeSantis and Pence tied at 22%.

Cruz, 19%.

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, 6%.

However, with Trump included in the poll, Cruz received just 3% of the voters, while Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., got 2%.

Others included in the polling were South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who all got 1%, and Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., who got 0%.

“[There is] no question at this juncture that President Trump would dominate the 2024 field with no potential challenger even breaking into double digits,” Fabrizio, a pollster for Trump's 2020 campaign, stated.

DeSantis, a former congressman, has recently become popular among conservatives after keeping his state's economy largely open during the pandemic. DeSantis seemingly owes his current stature to Trump who plucked him from near-obscurity in late 2017 — endorsing the then-congressman’s Republican primary bid for governor. DeSantis, who had been running well behind state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam to that point, suddenly became the heavy favorite — and won easily.

DeSantis has spent his first few years in office repaying that loyalty. The most glaring example is DeSantis’ handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Florida was one of the last states to issue a stay-at-home order last spring, a fact that DeSantis directly attributed to Trump’s attitude about the danger of the virus. Explaining in early April 2020 what changed his mind about the severity of the virus, DeSantis said this: “When you see the President up there and his demeanor the last couple of days, that’s not necessarily how he always is.”

Over the past year, DeSantis has pushed for schools in the state to reopen quicker than most other states, which led to a teachers union in the state suing him. He has been skeptical of the efficacy of mask wearing.

Last weekend, a straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference showed DeSantis getting 43% of the vote on potential nominees when Trump was not listed as an option for 2024. Pence, meanwhile, holds just 1%.

The poll of 1,264 Republican voters was conducted between Feb. 20 through March 2 and carried a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
