Trump stated that his team informed the Department of Defense days before the assembly that masses might be greater than anticipated and 10,000 national guardsmen must be ready to deploy. He explained that -- from what he understands -- the warning was passed onward to leaders at the Capitol, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi -- and he understood that the request was denied because these leaders did not like the optics of 10,000 troops at the Capitol.
"So, you know, that was a big mistake," he explained.
Pelosi’s office and the Defense Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump further announced that he "hated" to see what took place on Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol.

When pressed, Irving explained that he took a call from Sund before while on the Congress floor.

Sund and Irving differed on when the National Guard was summoned and on calls for the guard beforehand. Sund stated he spoke to both Stenger and Irving about requesting the National Guard in the days ahead of the disorder, and that Irving said he was concerned about the "optics" of having them present. Irving denied that, saying Sund’s account was "categorically false."
