Trump administration HUD Secretary Scott Turner unveiled what he described as serious failures in federal housing oversight, pointing to billions of dollars in improper spending under Democratic leadership. According to HUD, more than $5 billion in payment errors occurred in 2024 alone, out of over $50 billion in total rental assistance. The review also identified payments associated with roughly 30,000 deceased individuals, government-backed mortgages issued to non-citizens, and public housing benefits provided to undocumented immigrants.
