In addition to airing on NBC, the primetime event will also air across MSNBC and CNBC, stream on NBC News NOW and be available in Spanish on Telemundo’s digital platforms.
NBC News announces it has a statement from National Institutes of Health clinical director Dr. Clifford Lane indicating he and White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci have reviewed Trump’s medical data and concluded with a “high degree of confidence” the president is “not shedding infectious virus.”
A formal matchup between the Republican president and Democrat Joe Biden that was scheduled for Thursday in Miami by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debate was canceled after commission shifted the format from a town hall to a virtual meeting, and Trump declined to participate.
Biden is participating in an ABC News town hall Thursday in Philadelphia.
As Trump tries to make up for time lost on the campaign trail during his recent bout with the coronavirus, Trump on Wednesday will hold a rally in Iowa, with less than three weeks to go until the U.S. presidential election.
Trump will then turn around to participate in the Miami town hall hosted by NBC News on Thursday evening.
That Trump is traveling to Iowa so close to Election Day is a worrisome sign for his re-election hopes. He beat Democrat Hillary Clinton there by almost 10 percentage points in 2016, but recent polls have shown the state to be competitive.
Trump will seemingly be spending much of the week trying to strengthen his white, conservative base rather than trying to appeal directly to undecided voters, many of whom live in the nation’s suburbs. Reuters/Ipsos polling released this week showed Biden widening his lead in the key states of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania – states Trump won in 2016.
On Tuesday in Florida, Biden told a group of seniors at a community center that Trump had recklessly dismissed the threat that the virus had posed to their at-risk population. "To Donald Trump, you’re expendable. You’re forgettable," Biden said.
Trump has touted his handling of the crisis.
The Trump campaign said it would conduct temperature checks and hand out masks at his rallies but not require attendees to wear them.
