This year's J'Ouvert celebration was no exception. Although officially shut down, people still showed. Unfortunately, what should have been a happy party turned into a tragedy. it is reported that five people were shot.
The youngest victim was a 6 year old little boy.
This festival begins pre-dawn and is a well known West Indian Celebration. It is reported that approximately 300 people lined the streets. Witnesses describe the scene and say the gunfire rang out just before 3 a.m.
It all happened at the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Crown Street in Crown Heights. “It was really crazy — everyone was in shock,” said Joshua Kristal, who was marching with the procession.
Currently the NYC Police force sources identified the victims as Maxwell Cesc-Dinho, 6, his mother, Patricia Brathwaite, 47, Yves St. Flavin, 40, Bob Charlotin, 46, and Kelly Barthold, 34.
Explaining the situation it is reported that. Patricia Brathwaite who was shot in the foot, had an address in the Crown Street apartment building right where the shooting occurred.
Yves St. Flavin was shot in the left foot, while Charlotin and Barthold were both blasted in the right leg. All five victims were taken to Kings County Hospital Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
According to the NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison, the mother and son were just getting out of a cab when they were shot. The little boy was in surgery Monday morning, police sources said.
From early estimates it seems that the police and Harrison feel the shooting was gang-related.“It looks like, it’s unfortunate, a gang-related shooting,” he told reporters at the scene Monday morning. “This is a notorious gang area that, you know, we’ve had problems with in the past.”
He did not speak on the shooter's motive or which of the victims were the intended target.
The Police Force has initially allowed the people to celebrate peacefully. Harrison said many residents took to barbecuing and playing music outside instead. “We actually promote that,” he said.
“That doesn’t mean that people should come out and start shooting.”
Unfortunately, a video of this gruesome event was released. This extremely graphic video from the scene shows the moment the shots rang out.
The young boy is seen lying on the sidewalk in a pool of blood as a screaming crowd of bystanders and police officers surround him. Immediately after he was shot, a woman, who appeared to be the child’s mother, rushed to his aid.
