Detroit’s Black Firefighters Back White Recruit Fired over ‘Racially Insensitive’ Watermelon

Written by  Ben Kew

A group of black firefighters from Detroit are backing their white colleague after he was fired on his first day for bringing a “racially insensitive” watermelon to work.

Robert Pattinson, 41, was fired after introducing himself to his fellow firefighters by bringing in a watermelon with a pink bow on top as part of workplace tradition of new recruits bringing in a gift for fellow employees on their first day on the job.

Yet Second Battalion Chief Shawn McCarty confirmed that some staff argued it was “racially insensitive” to bring a watermelon to a firehouse, and Pattinson was consequently discharged by Fire Commissioner Eric Jones, who described the incident as “offensive”:

There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior inside the Detroit Fire Department. On Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at Engine 55, a trial firefighter (probationary employee) engaged in unsatisfactory work behavior which was deemed offensive and racially insensitive to members of the Detroit Fire Department. After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the best course of action was to terminate the employment of this probationary employee.

However, a number of black firefighters from the same department reacted to the incident with a big show of support for Pattinson, describing him as an “amazing dude” who had “good intentions.

Cudos to these firemen. We need more men like these willing to stand up to superiors when an injustice is done especially when it's racially motivated. Firefighters are awesome first responders and race has nothing to do with their awesomeness.

What on earth could anyone bring to a firehouse that would feed a group of men and women. It's cool, easy to eat, can feed a lot of people at once.
When is this stupidity ever going to stop when we can't even bring an innocent gift that would be welcomed by most people by reading racism into it. Grow up people. Take it for what it is - a pleasant fruit that would feed many and most people enjoy one.

Do the Detroit Fire Department brass not know that we white folks eat watermelon, too.? Do they REALLY believe that a new firefighter would deliberately risk antagonising his co-workers on his first day at work? Was the joke insensitive? Perhaps. But, was it firing offense? Ask his co-workers (or those who would have been his co-workers).

What I always told my daughter when she was a little girl, was that humor is subjective. When I first read this report, I presumed that stupidity had been elevated to a new high.

When everyone else is running OUT of a burning building, firefighters are running IN. As a firefighter, you are quite literally placing your life in the hands of a brother firefighter. I doubt seriously that the 'new guy' was trying to insult the old-timers. At best it was harmless, at worst, stupid.

Kudos to the 'old-timers' for showing that they are the grown-ups in the room.

Sounds like UTTER STUPIDITY to me. A fruit is not racial. Well at least not to normal people it is a food nothing more. Only those looking to be offended will be so by any and everything. The one who fired him is the one who should be gone to get rid of a man over something as STUPID as this is not one who should be in charge.

The Left can kiss my... Chiquita banana! :P God bless these men. In the military, we served and fought together for this nation. The Left can simply be left behind! (and they can lick it too)!

Wonder how the fruit industry feels about the attacks against bananas and watermelon? People might be afraid to buy them now, for fear they will be called racist.
