New California Law Makes Misusing Gender Pronouns Jailable Offense

Written by  Trey Sanchez

On Thursday, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill making California an even worse place to live. It is now illegal to be factual and call someone by their proper gender if they, xe, or sie don’t prefer it.

Fortunately, though quite oddly, it only applies to nursing homes and residential care facilities... for now, at least.

Under the California Health and Safety code, the “LGBT Senior Bill of Rights” warns that anyone who “willfully or repeatedly” doesn’t “use a transgender resident’s preferred name or pronouns… is guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine not to exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000), by imprisonment in the county jail for a period not to exceed one year, or by both the fine and imprisonment.”

Welcome to California!

State Sen. Scott Weiner authored the bill and told those who oppose it, “Everyone is entitled to their religious view, but when you enter the public space — when you are running an institution — you are in a workplace, you are in a civil setting, and you have to follow the law.”

In addition to word policing, nursing home staff must allow senior residents to use whichever bathroom they wish.
