Preliminary reports suggest a hammer-wielding man attacked a cop and was then shot.
The attacker is believed to have survived the shooting in the northeastern corner of the square in front of Notre-Dame, Metro of the UK reported.
“Square in front of #NotreDame Intervention being the number of police, avoid the area,” police tweeted.
French Journalist David Rahul Métreau said: “All that I can say is that a vehicle resembling an armored truck is in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral,” the Mirror reported.
“Loud bangs just now at Notre Dame. Crowd scattered. Sirens going off,” witness Mark Johnson posted on Twitter.
Another witness said: “We’re trapped in Notre-Dame de Paris, something is happening outside. Police sirens can be heard. They are not letting anyone in or out.”
Mark Johnson from Austin, Texas, tweeted: “Loud bangs just now at Notre Dame. Crowd scattered. Sirens going off,” Metro reported.
