The Ukrainian government has issued iodine pills to civilians near the Zaporizhzhia power plant as fears are rising about a possible radiation leak. The governor of the region, Oleksandr Starukh, instructed the civilians about using potassium iodine pills in the event of a radiation leak.

The medication is used to help the body protect against some of the radiation that it might otherwise absorb in unhealthy ways. The CDC reports it must be taken 24 hours before or 4 hours after exposure to be most effective.

There are increased fears of something like this because of continued shelling in and around the nuclear power plant. Approximately 25,000 of these pills have been issued to residents within 30 miles of the plant.

The Zaporizhzhia plant has been occupied by Russian troops for over six months, having been captured shortly after the country's invasion began on February 24. For now, radiation levels in the area remain normal, but both sides have accused each other of shelling the plant.

The Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom has stated that Russian troops have even shelled the plant within the last 24 hours and that they are currently attempting to assess the resulting damage.

The local governor for the area said the following about the situation: "There are risks of hydrogen leakage and sputtering of radioactive substances, and the fire hazard is high.'

The shelling was so intense that it even knocked the facility temporarily offline. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi stated that he is on his way to the site to assess the damage and the level of risk at present.

"We must protect the safety and security of Ukraine's and Europe's biggest nuclear facility," Grossi said on Twitter with a picture of himself with 13 other staff members.

The United Nations has called for an end to all military activity in the immediate area. They are highly concerned about the release of radiation from the plant due to shelling.

Between Thursday, August 25, and Friday, August 26, the plant was cut off from the electrical grid for the first time in its history.

Battles continue to rage both in this area of Ukraine and in Russian territory. At times, factual reporting is difficult as both sides attempt to put their spin on things. However, at this time, neither side shows signs of giving up.
