Dr. Anthony Fauci was audibly booed by fans before he threw the first pitch at Tuesday's Seattle Mariners game against the New York Yankees.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, might have been pursuing redemption when he stepped on the mound at T-Mobile Park prior to the game.

The country's leading figure in the fight against COVID-19 was ridiculed in 2020 when he threw out a horrific first pitch before the Washington Nationals' opening day.

He completely missed the target then, yet he seemed to have been practicing before his pitch in Seattle.

Fauci lobbed the ball, which was caught easily by Scott Servais, the manager of the Mariners.

After the throw, Servais had Fauci sign his mask.

Along with throwing the first pitch, Fauci was further praised with the Hutch Award.

"The Hutch Award was created in 1965 in honor of Fred Hutchinson, the former MLB pitcher and manager who died from lung cancer the previous year," according to a release posted on the Mariners' website.

"The honor was established by his longtime friends and is given annually to an active MLB player who 'best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire' of Hutchinson, by persevering through adversity."

Fauci is just the second nonplayer to be honored with the award, the release noted.

The first was former President Jimmy Carter.

Earlier, the longtime baseball fan Fauci further mingled with Mariners chairman and managing general partner John Stanton, president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto and president of business operations Catie Griggs. They were among the group that presented the honor to Fauci pregame.

Hutchinson’s death motivated his brother Dr. Bill Hutchinson, a surgeon in Seattle, to create the Seattle-based cancer center. In addition to a history of significant breakthroughs in cancer research, the center is known globally for expertise in infectious diseases and has been a prominent leader in tracking, monitoring and developing vaccines and treatments for COVID-19.

Former Mariners who’ve got the Hutch Award include Dee Gordon (2019), Raúl Ibañez (2013) and Jamie Moyer (2003). Fauci is only the second non-player to receive the award, joining former President Jimmy Carter.
