Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is using her GOP primary challengers’ words against them in a new TV advertisement expected to be published during the final weeks of her primary campaign.

The ad, published Tuesday, stresses a compilation of her Republican opponents raising suspicions about the 2020 election during a June debate, with Cheney attempting to distance herself amid her toughest re-election bid. The spot builds on Cheney's previous campaign ads as she tries to paint her Trump-backed opponents as dangerous to Democracy.

"We've got to elect serious leaders. We have to elect leaders who will take their oath of office seriously, leaders who won't simply say what they think people want to hear," Cheney, who voted in favor of the second effort to impeach former President Donald Trump following the Jan. 6 riot, said in the closing of the ad.

The ad starts with challenger Harriet Hageman, whom Trump supported, raising “serious questions about the 2020 election.” Hageman made the comments during a GOP primary debate on June 30, which prompted a tense back-and-forth between her and Cheney.

During the debate, Cheney challenged Hageman to confess that the 2020 election wasn’t rigged. When she didn’t give a direct answer, Cheney slammed her for being “completely beholden” to Trump.

That ad continues with similar election-denying sentiments from primary challengers state Sen. Anthony Bouchard and businesswoman Robyn Belinskey.

The ad comes at a critical point of the primary cycle, with Wyoming voters set to head to the polls for the primary election on Aug. 16. Cheney has led in fundraising, raking in $13 million over the primary cycle compared to just $3.8 million from top challenger Hageman. But Hageman has led the incumbent in in-state fundraising, with the bulk of Cheney's donors residing outside Wyoming, according to recent data.

Cheney, first elected in 2016, faces an uphill battle to defend her seat in November as polls show her trailing behind Hageman by 22 points, according to a poll by the Casper Star-Tribune.

Cheney’s chances of being reelected have been particularly rocky ever since she voted to impeach Trump in 2021, joining just nine other House Republicans in doing so. The incumbent’s involvement with the Jan. 6 select committee, where she serves as vice chairwoman, has deepened the wedge between her and the Trump wing of the party.

The Department of Justice is investigating former President Donald Trump as part of its larger criminal inquiry into efforts to overturn the 2020 election, according to a new report.

Prosecutors have begun asking witnesses, including top aides to former Vice President Mike Pence, about conversations they had with Trump, his lawyers, and others in his inner circle, sources told the Washington Post.
