Big Tech is discriminating against conservatives and independent thinkers by censoring them online, which has a cumulative effect because it further prevents followers from hearing new concepts and opinions, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Media Research Center (MRC) Free Speech America.

MRC calls this "secondhand censorship," which it defines as the number of times that users on social media have information kept from them.

According to the study, users were affected by secondhand censorship over 140 million times in the first quarter of this year. That was the direct censorship of individuals and organizations at least 4,000 times.

The study mentioned some of the worst instances of secondhand censorship, like when President Donald Trump was censored and over 90 million followers could no longer interact with his posts.

Another instance was the New York Post’s report on Hunter Biden's laptop before the 2020 election. The study pointed out censorship occurred when Facebook declined distribution before a fact-check and Twitter locked the New York Post's account.

The MRC study, using its own CensorTrack database, mentioned Facebook as the worst offender, with users undergoing secondhand censorship 86,627,526 times. YouTube was second at 23,543,230, and Twitter was third at 17,065,054.

"In just three months, actions by Big Tech censors kept content from reaching users over 140 million times," Media Research Center founder and President Brent Bozell announced. "If Donald Trump was still on Twitter, the first quarter number would have been over 150 billion."

Bozell complained, "It's truly mind-boggling that the Silicon Valley speech police have this kind of power," continuing, "this report gets us one step closer to understanding the real impact anti-conservative discrimination at Facebook, Twitter and others are having on speech in this country."

Meanwhile, Former New York Times journalist Alex Berenson (who had about 344,000 Twitter followers before his August 2021 permanent suspension), Free Speech Alliance (FSA) member Project Veritas (which had roughly 733,000 Twitter followers before its February 2021 permanent suspension) and fellow FSA member and pro-life news outlet LifeSiteNews.com (which had roughly 200,000 Facebook followers before the platform permanently banned the publication, according to a group spokesperson) all had their accounts permanently suspended before the first quarter. This report does not assess the impacts of secondhand censorship for these three banned groups, nor does it account for the times they could have tweeted, posted or otherwise shared content.

Furthermore, streaming platform Spotify removed roughly 70 episodes of comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast, yet that tells just a portion of the story. In MRC’s count, we tallied only one example of censorship against Rogan for Spotify’s removal of at least 70 episodes from the platform in February after Rogan’s past uses of the N-word. Rogan had roughly 11 million viewers of his Spotify podcasts, according to Daily Mail, Fox News and New York Post reporting.
