Marine Anti-Terrorism Unit Deployed To Protect U.S. Embassy In Haiti Amidst Gang Violence Surge Featured
Written by story2In the face of escalating violence in Haiti's capital, a U.S. Marine anti-terrorism unit has been dispatched to safeguard the American embassy, according to U.S. military officials.
The U.S. Southern Command confirmed early Wednesday that the State Department had requested the deployment of the U.S. Marine Fleet-Anti-terrorism Security Team (FAST) to bolster security at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
The statement further clarified that the embassy remains operational, albeit with limited functions, primarily focused on assisting U.S. citizens and supporting Haitian-led initiatives for a peaceful power transition.
Over the past weekend, the U.S. military had already dispatched forces to Haiti to reinforce security at the embassy and evacuate non-essential personnel, including diplomats' families, who had stayed on following an evacuation order last summer.
During a Tuesday briefing, State Department spokesperson Matt Miller admitted he could not provide an exact count of Americans still in Haiti seeking to depart.
[tweet_embed]March 13, 2024[/tweet_embed]Following a meeting with Caribbean leaders in Jamaica on Monday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the deployment of a multinational force to Haiti, a move expected to cost $100 million. Blinken also pledged an additional $33 million in humanitarian aid and the development of a joint proposal, agreed upon by Caribbean leaders and "all of the Haitian stakeholders to expedite a political transition," as reported by the Associated Press.
However, Haitian gang leader Jimmy "Barbecue" Chérizier countered on Monday that the "Haitian people will choose who will govern them," according to The Associated Press.
The Jamaica meeting was convened by members of the regional trade bloc known as Caricom, which has been advocating for a transitional government in Haiti amidst widespread protests calling for Prime Minister Ariel Henry's resignation. On Tuesday, Henry announced his intention to resign once a transitional presidential council is established.
Meanwhile, powerful gangs continue to wreak havoc across Port-au-Prince, targeting key government facilities. Since February 29, armed assailants have torched police stations, shut down major international airports, and stormed the country's two largest prisons, freeing over 4,000 inmates.
