The recent initiative spearheaded by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) appears to be losing steam, with a lack of sufficient backing from fellow lawmakers to push forward the motion to vacate his chair.

This development was reported by Axios and subsequently referenced by Jeff Charles in an article for Redstate.

The motion, set in motion by Greene over a month ago, encountered resistance from the get-go, not solely from Johnson's faction but also from a diverse array of House members. Prominent Republican figures have voiced their hesitance or outright disapproval of this maneuver. For instance, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), recognized for his involvement in the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, candidly declared, “I oppose a motion to vacate at the current time.” In a similar vein, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) commented that the motion is “pretty much not gonna happen” due to the thin majority held by their party.

Even legislators such as Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) have mirrored these sentiments, indicating that the timing and backing for such a motion are not currently favorable. On the Democratic side, figures including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), have committed to defending Johnson, with Jeffries asserting, “We will vote to table Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Motion to Vacate the Chair.”

Amid these debates, some Republican lawmakers, like Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), have recommended concentrating on more urgent matters rather than internal party disputes. Roy underscored the necessity for unity and efficient governance, mirroring the wishes of the voters, who he stated “want us to unify and beat Democrats.”

Speaker Johnson himself has remained concentrated on the operational requirements of Congress, asserting, “I have to do my job, we have to do what we believe to be the right thing. What the country needs right now is a functioning Congress.” This remark highlights his dedication to governance over internal party discord.

Despite the evident lack of support for Greene’s proposal, it has illuminated the internal dynamics and varying priorities within the Republican Party. As the country nears pivotal elections, the party seems intent on presenting a united front, prioritizing governance and tackling wider issues rather than becoming entangled in leadership disputes. This strategic focus is likely to play a key role in their endeavors to sustain credibility and sway with the American voting populace.
