In a lawsuit filed against Columbia University on Monday, an unidentified Jewish student has accused the prestigious institution of neglecting to address antisemitic demonstrations and failing to ensure the safety of its Jewish students.

The lawsuit alleges that the university turned a blind eye to antisemitic slogans and menacing behavior by students and protesters at a camp set up on April 18 at Columbia University. The camp was established to protest the university's connections with Israel. The lawsuit accuses the university of ignoring the continuous harassment of Jewish students.

The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, states, "These extreme demonstrators are not engaging in constitutionally protected free speech. Instead, they are openly inciting violence against Jewish students." It further provides an example of a Columbia student holding a sign with an arrow pointing at Jewish Columbia students waving American and Israeli flags. The sign reads, 'Al-Qasam’s next targets,' suggesting that these students should be the next victims of a massacre by Hamas’ military wing.

The lawsuit comes in the wake of multiple demonstrations at Ivy League schools following a deadly terrorist attack by Hamas against Israel. Protesters at these demonstrations have been heard making statements such as "resistance is justified." This includes an October 15 protest where attendees chanted a slogan with implications of eradicating Israel, following a Cornell University professor's description of the attacks as "exhilarating."

The complaint accuses Columbia University of allowing a small group of radical demonstrators to target Jewish students and faculty with harassment, hate speech, and violence solely because they are, or appear to be, Jewish. It states, "Columbia’s inaction and willingness to allow for such vile conduct is antithetical to fostering an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion."

The lawsuit provides an instance where a demonstrator, upon noticing a female student wearing a Star of David necklace approaching the encampment, announced, 'Attention, everyone! We have Zionists who have entered the camp!' He then commanded over 100 protesters to lock arms and instructed, 'So that we can push them out of the camp, one step forward! Another step forward!' The crowd of students then advanced towards the lone Jewish student until she was forced to leave.

The lawsuit further alleges that the protest leader was later seen on video stating, "Zionists do not deserve to live."

The lawsuit demands that Columbia University adhere to its safety policies and terminate hybrid learning. It argues that Jewish students are confined to their homes for virtual classes, deprived of meaningful interaction with other students and faculty, and unable to sit for examinations with their peers. It warns, "The segregation of Jewish students is a dangerous development that can quickly escalate into more severe acts of violence and discrimination."
