The majority of Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) sightings are likely not extraterrestrial spacecraft reminiscent of those seen in popular science fiction franchises like Star Trek or Star Wars.

However, this doesn't diminish their potential threat. These sightings could be anything from weather balloons and high-altitude wildlife to misidentified military aircraft. More ominously, they could be drones or other espionage equipment deployed by hostile nations.

In the case of an unusual sighting captured by Michelle Reyes on March 25, none of these possibilities have been definitively ruled out. Reyes recorded the peculiar footage while her plane was descending into LaGuardia airport in New York City. She later shared the footage on Facebook, captioning it, "I saw a UFO coming home yesterday! Can anyone help me identify what this is?!" She also posted a still image of the object.

The 15-second video shows a small, dark object swiftly moving past the window, barely noticeable at first glance. However, the accompanying still images provide a clearer view of a dark, cylindrical object speeding past the plane. The post sparked a flurry of speculation, with some suggesting the object was extraterrestrial, while others posited it could be spy equipment from the Middle East.

The New York Post picked up Reyes' story, reporting that she had contacted the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) about her sighting but received no response. The FAA stated there were no reports from pilots regarding the object.

Several experts subsequently analyzed the footage. Thomas Wertman of Ohio's Mutual UFO Network noted that the object was "relatively close" to the plane and estimated its altitude at about 2,500 feet. However, he could not definitively identify the object, stating that he didn't believe it was a drone or military aircraft, as "drones aren't supposed to fly at that altitude, at least legally." He also ruled out the possibility of it being a passenger plane due to the absence of features like wings or a tail.

The Daily Mail reported that Reyes' father, a former Navy man, suggested it might be a drone, expressing concern about its proximity to the plane. Ben Hansen of Discovery's "UFO Witness" echoed this surprise, noting the object's speed and closeness to the aircraft.

While these two men, both interested in proving extraterrestrial contact, may not be the most impartial experts, their independent analyses did shed some light on the object. Even if the object was relatively harmless, such as the "solar balloon" suggested by some Facebook commenters, its proximity to the flight path indicates a risk of collision or ingestion into a jet engine, which could result in catastrophic damage.

However, the object may not have been harmless. According to a leading theory on UFO sightings near military bases, it could have been a surveillance drone deployed by America's adversaries. If it were proven to be terrestrial in origin and traced back to China, Russia, or the Middle East, this would not alleviate the concerns raised by the sighting. On the contrary, it would only heighten them.
