However, the investigators concluded that the manifesto was not merely a work of fiction as Ye claimed, but was based on her personal experiences. The document reportedly began with a disclaimer stating it was purely fictional.

Excerpts from the 129-page manifesto were included in the application for charges. The document read:
"I want to shoot up my school. I've been preparing for it for the past few months. As I sit in front of my dad's gun case and stare at the sleek, black gun inside, all I can think about is my finger on the trigger, taking aim, and killing people. The gun is an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. It's the kind of gun with a long barrel and a stock you put up against your shoulder. The gun is going to change lives tomorrow."

Ye also detailed her plans for the attack, including her choice of classrooms and her method of sneaking the gun into the school. She also contemplated the use of bombs and chemical weapons, which she claimed were easy to make using instructions available online.

The manifesto also revealed Ye's consideration of targeting her former elementary school, citing the ease of attacking younger children and her personal grudges against the school.
Despite her contemplation of becoming a serial killer, Ye concluded that a high school would be the best target due to her familiarity with the layout and the convenience of entry.

Ye also expressed her fear of failing in her suicide attempt and living the rest of her life disabled and serving a life sentence, as Maryland does not have the death penalty.

The news reports on it, and protests for gun control happen. Nobody can escape death in the end. Why does it matter who delivers the final blow? It would bring me a lot of joy and satisfaction to kill, so it's kind of worth it, in a way."
