Ian Golash, a high school teacher in Seattle, has been suspended following his controversial comments supporting Hamas, a Palestinian political organization.

The social studies chairman at Chief Sealth International High School was placed on administrative leave on April 11 after a video interview of him was circulated by Accuracy in Media (AIM), a conservative group that uncovers antisemitism in educational institutions.

In the interview, AIM President Adam Guillette questioned Golash about the October 7 attack on Israel. Golash affirmed that he believed the attack was justified. When asked about the alleged rape of women at the Nova music festival in the Negev desert, Golash responded by questioning the validity of the claims. He also confirmed that he believed the deaths of women at the festival were justified, but clarified that he was referring to the resistance against Israel, not the murder of innocent women.

Golash, who had previously faced backlash for Facebook posts questioning the Hamas attacks, issued a statement on Wednesday denying support for any form of killing. He condemned the atrocities committed on October 7, including rape, mutilation, and murder, whether perpetrated by Hamas fighters, Gazans, Israeli citizens, or the Israeli Defense Forces. Golash expressed his desire to differentiate fact from fiction regarding the attack and voiced his support for a peaceful resistance against Israel.

The teacher also revealed that he has been the target of bomb threats and harassment at his home, which he described as "deeply troubling" and contrary to the open dialogue he aims to foster in his classroom.

Golash's father, Mike Golash, shared on Facebook that his son was placed on paid administrative leave for the rest of the semester for speaking out against genocide in Gaza. He added that his son was instructed not to communicate with any students or teachers in the Seattle school system, a directive he believes infringes on his son's First Amendment rights.

The Seattle school district issued a statement affirming its zero-tolerance policy towards antisemitic, Islamophobic, or any form of hate speech. It expressed deep concern over the conversation between Golash and the AIM representative and assured that an immediate and appropriate investigation is underway.

This incident follows a previous controversy involving Golash, who was accused of berating a student for identifying as "straight" on a "Social Identity Wheel" worksheet. The student's mother claimed that Golash deemed the term "offensive," prompting her to withdraw her child from his class. Golash denied singling out the student but admitted to discouraging the use of the term "straight" due to its potential negative connotation.
