Climate scientists have issued a warning regarding the environmental impact of denim jeans.

As reported by the Daily Mail, a study conducted by researchers at the Guangdong University of Technology has revealed concerning findings about the carbon footprint associated with different types of jeans. The study compared traditional jeans with "fast fashion" jeans, a category of denim garments that are typically worn only a few times by consumers.

Fast fashion jeans, known for their rapid production, transportation, and disposal, were found to produce approximately 11 times more CO2 emissions than jeans that are worn more frequently. In contrast, traditional jeans, which are worn an average of 120 times, were found to have a significantly smaller carbon footprint.

Lead author of the study, Dr. Ya Zhou, emphasized the impact of overconsumption in the clothing industry, stating, "The humble wardrobe staple – a pair of jeans – has a significant impact on the environment."

The study highlighted the role of post-purchase activities such as washing, drying, and ironing in contributing to the carbon footprint of traditional jeans, accounting for nearly half of their total emissions. On the other hand, the majority of emissions from fast fashion jeans were attributed to production and transportation processes.

With the fashion industry already accounting for ten percent of global emissions, the researchers recommended that consumers consider purchasing clothing items, including jeans, from second-hand stores as a way to significantly reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%.
