A proposal to rename Washington Dulles International Airport, a primary international hub in the Washington, DC area, as Trump International Airport has been introduced by a group of Republican House Representatives.

The bill was put forward on Friday by House GOP Chief Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler, with the support of cosponsoring Representatives Michael Waltz, Angy Ogles, Chuck Fleischmann, Paul Gosar, Barry Moore, and Troy Nehls, as reported by Fox News.

Reschenthaler expressed his admiration for former President Donald J. Trump, stating, "In my lifetime, our nation has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump." He further added, "As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil."

The bill, if passed, would mandate that "the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia shall after the date of the enactment of this Act be known and designated as the ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport.’" The bill further states, "Any reference in any law, regulation, map, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the airport referred to in subsection (a) shall be considered to be a reference to the Donald J. Trump International Airport."

Dulles Airport, a bustling international hub, services airlines and routes that do not operate out of the nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. It is a critical point of travel for lawmakers and other Washington officials. In 2023, Dulles was ranked 33rd out of 764 US airports in terms of passenger traffic, servicing approximately 25 million passengers annually. It is also the fourth largest airport in the country in terms of land area.

Despite the bill's slim chances of being considered by the Democrat-controlled Senate, if passed, the airport would be the second in the area named after a Republican president. "In 1998, Congress renamed the National Airport in Washington after one of our great presidents, Ronald Reagan. It is only fitting that we would do the same for another one of our greatest presidents, Donald J. Trump, especially as he stands against the onslaught of weaponized government to fight for Americans like us," Moore told Fox News.

Gosar echoed this sentiment, stating, "I can see no more fitting recognition than naming both airports in our nation’s capital after America’s two best presidents: DCA after President Reagan and Dulles after President Trump." In a press release, Reschenthaler highlighted Trump’s "unprecedented wins for our nation" during his presidency, including record-low unemployment, increased incomes for middle-class families, making the US the number one producer of oil and gas in the world, and securing the southern border.
