A migrant caravan, consisting of approximately 2,000 individuals, is currently journeying from southern Mexico towards the Texas border, with an expected arrival in the El Paso region within the coming days.

Some reports, however, suggest that the caravan may contain as many as 3,000 participants.

The leader of the caravan, speaking through a bullhorn, led the group in a chant of "A la Frontera," translating to "To the border." The group collectively declared, “We are not criminals, we are international workers.”

The caravan, according to some, is likely to be divided into smaller groups by cartels to facilitate an easier entry into Texas. Church-run border shelters are bracing themselves for the impending influx of migrants, despite the scarcity of housing due to the thousands of migrants already present.

Rev. Francisco Bueno Guillen, director of the Casa del Migrante shelter in Juarez, Mexico, confirmed that they are in contact with personnel in migrant shelters in southern Mexico. He stated, “They saw many people have come into the country recently and are being joined by others already there. And yes, they are coming to Juarez.”

Rev. Guillen anticipates the arrival of at least 2,000 migrants who embarked from Chiapas, Mexico, in El Paso in the imminent future.

The caravan, known as "Migrant's Via Crusis," was organized by Mexican activists to safeguard migrants journeying to the southern border of the United States. The caravan departed from Tapachula on the Guatemalan border last Monday. An additional group of several hundred foreign nationals is currently stationed in a camp in Chihuahua City, approximately 230 miles from El Paso.

The El Paso Catholic Diocese has pledged to its counterparts south of the border that it will “continue to marshal all available resources and be aware of the trends.” The Diocese has demonstrated its ability to respond effectively to such surges, providing a safe and orderly process for those permitted to enter, according to Border Report.

In response to the approaching caravan, hundreds of specially trained Texas National Guard troops were deployed to El Paso last week. The Texas Tactical Border Force has been mobilized to maintain control of the area.

A spokesperson for the Texas Military Department informed KTSM that the Tactical Border Force specializes in civil disturbance. While further details from the Texas Military Department are limited, border security remains a significant concern for many state officials.

As of Monday, the caravan was en route to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, the sister city to El Paso, Texas. The group's journey is being monitored by Voir Dire International, a Houston-based group that has been tracking mass immigration events for several years. The caravan, named Caravan 35, or the "Way of the Cross Migrants," comprises men, women, children, and family groups from Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and 17 other countries.

Some members of the caravan are headed to Mexico City to use the CBP One App to schedule an appointment to enter through a legal port of entry, while others are bound for Juarez.

The question remains as to whether the migrants will attempt to breach the border barrier, as occurred in March. Those apprehended in the subsequent riot were released on their own recognizance, a move that has arguably emboldened others to attempt the same. This situation is a stark reflection of the current state of affairs under the Biden administration.
