An Israeli airstrike conducted at the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria on Monday resulted in the death of Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a high-ranking commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps, as reported by a Lebanese security source to Reuters.

According to the U.S. Treasury Department's 2010 sanctions, Zahedi was identified as a pivotal figure in Iran's backing of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Reportedly, Reuters correspondents present at the scene in the Syrian capital witnessed smoke billowing from the remains of a structure decimated in the airstrike.

When questioned about the incident, an Israeli military spokesperson informed Reuters, "We do not comment on reports in the foreign media."

The U.S. Treasury's 2010 statement highlighted Zahedi's role as a liaison to Hezbollah and Syrian intelligence services, tasked with ensuring the delivery of weapons to Hezbollah.
