In a recent video obtained by 9NEWS, a Denver city official was seen imploring undocumented immigrants to reconsider their decision to settle in the city, suggesting they might find better support in cities such as New York or Chicago.

The official in question, Andres Carrera, serves as the Communications Liaison for newcomers and is also the political director for Mayor Mike Johnston (D). The video, which was broadcasted over the weekend, shows Carrera addressing a group of undocumented immigrants who have been residing in Denver since their arrival on Tuesday.

Carrera, speaking in Spanish, was heard saying, "We are not going to block you if you want to stay here… I am here to tell you know your path is not over." He followed this with a stark warning, "If you stay here you are going to suffer even more, and I don’t want to see this."

Carrera's message was unambiguous: Denver was at its limit due to an influx of migrants, resulting in a shortage of resources. He proposed that cities like New York and Chicago might offer better opportunities, including extended shelter and increased job prospects.

In an attempt to aid their relocation, Carrera offered to provide free bus tickets to their preferred destination. However, he clarified that while the city could assist in getting them near the Canadian border, it would not transport them across.

Despite Carrera's sincere plea, the response from the migrants was not as anticipated. When asked who wished to relocate to another city, the response was tepid. In contrast, when asked who wanted to stay in Denver, a unanimous chorus of "todos" – 'everyone' – filled the room.

As reported by 9NEWS, Denver has a policy of providing shelter to individual migrants for two weeks and families with children for six weeks. After this period, they are required to leave the shelters. This policy is likely a result of enforcing strict limits, potentially due to impending budget cuts.

Denver identifies itself as a sanctuary city due to its approach towards federal immigration enforcement. The city has adopted a policy of welcoming and including immigrants, irrespective of their legal status.
