In a groundbreaking move, New York City, governed by the Democratic party, is set to become the first American city to impose punitive tolls on drivers.

This decision was made after transit officials greenlit a $15 fee for most motorists venturing into the busiest areas of Manhattan, according to an AP report.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board members gave their approval to the congestion pricing fee, which is slated to be implemented in June. The board made only minor amendments to a plan that had been made public several months prior, while dismissing all pleas for exceptions from numerous commuter groups.

The approved vote sanctions a $15 toll on the majority of commuter passenger vehicles each time they enter Manhattan south of 60th Street. This zone, located south of Central Park, will be subject to the toll during daytime hours.

The tolls will vary depending on the vehicle type and time of entry into the city. Larger vehicles will be subject to higher tolls, while late-night entries and motorcycles will incur lower fees.

This type of scheme is not new on the global stage, with cities like London, Stockholm, Milan, and Singapore already having similar systems in place. These cities routinely impose fees on private motorists entering their busiest and most popular areas.

However, the implementation of such schemes has not been without controversy. In central London, for instance, locals have vehemently protested against the charges, which they argue unfairly impact their daily routines.

In addition to the congestion fee, commuters from other states and boroughs entering Manhattan already face approximately $15 in bridge and tunnel tolls. The congestion fee will be an additional charge on top of these existing tolls.

Parking within the congestion zone, which encompasses a dozen neighborhoods in Manhattan south of 60th street, already costs between $25 to $50 daily.

If the plan withstands the expected legal challenges, New York will make history as the first U.S. city to implement a congestion pricing scheme. This follows a similar move by Virginia officials in 2017, who introduced a toll system to alleviate congestion during rush hour on Interstate 66 near Washington, DC.
