The United Kingdom has experienced a significant population increase of nearly seven percent between 2011 and 2022, reaching an estimated 67.6 million people.

This surge, amounting to over four million individuals, has predominantly been attributed to the mass migration policies implemented by the Conservative government.

According to the latest population data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Tuesday, this marks the first comprehensive assessment of the country's population size since the 2021 Census. The figures reveal a notable 6.7 per cent rise in the UK's population, with approximately 67,596,281 people recorded by mid-2022, compared to figures from mid-2011.

Among the four nations comprising the UK, England witnessed the most substantial growth, with a 7.5 per cent increase over the specified period, equating to a rise of four million individuals, as outlined by the ONS.

Following England, Northern Ireland experienced a 5.3 per cent upsurge, equivalent to 96,225 people, while Scotland and Wales saw increases of 2.8 per cent (147,000 people) and 2.2 per cent (67,882 people) respectively.

The ONS had previously projected that the UK's population would surpass 70 million within the next two years, with estimations indicating a potential 10 per cent surge by 2036, bringing the total population to nearly 74 million individuals.

This demographic shift has predominantly been fueled by foreign migration, overshadowing internal growth, as birth rates have consistently remained below replacement levels during this period of population expansion.

Despite initial promises by the Conservative Party to curtail migration post-Brexit, recent trends have showcased a contradictory outcome, with net migration reaching record highs in the past two years, peaking at 1.2 million.

The repercussions of this influx are evident, with a report from the Resolution Foundation highlighting the exorbitant housing costs in the UK compared to other high-income countries within the OECD group. The report revealed that British housing prices surpass those in Austria by 57 per cent and are 36 per cent higher than in Canada.

Analyzing the real estate landscape, AllAgents reported a significant surge in the average house price in the UK, soaring from £130,499 in 1997 to £269,242 in 2022, representing a 106 per cent increase. In contrast, average wages only experienced a 16 per cent uptick during the same timeframe, exacerbating the challenge for many aspiring homeowners to enter the property market.

While the impact of migration on the housing sector is often downplayed by political and media elites, an assessment by investment bank Investec underscored the necessity to construct a quarter of a million new homes to accommodate the demands generated by the previous year's net migration.

Additionally, a recent report from the Centre for Cities think tank cautioned that the escalating migrant population in London, a focal point of population growth, could strain essential services such as the National Health Service (NHS).

Despite mounting economic strains on the middle and working classes due to mass migration, and a prevailing sentiment among the populace to reduce foreign influx, the Conservative government appears disinclined to address this issue. The leadership's neoliberal stance in Downing Street often emphasizes the vague notion that migration contributes to GDP growth and economic prosperity overall.

Although the Conservative Party had previously committed to reducing net migration from "the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands" before several general elections, former Chancellor of the Exchequer and key figure George Osborne later disclosed that the party leadership never genuinely supported this pledge. Osborne acknowledged that the party could have restricted non-EU immigration pre-Brexit but opted against such measures.
