Tragic Texas School Bus Crash Leaves Community In Mourning: What Happened?

A tragic accident unfolded in Texas on Friday when a school bus, ferrying 44 preschoolers and 11 adults, collided with a cement truck, resulting in two fatalities, as reported by KXAN News.

The incident occurred near Mustang Ridge in Bastrop County, around 2:17 p.m. local time. The bus, transporting Tom Green Elementary preschool students from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo, was hit by the truck which allegedly veered into its lane, according to KXAN News. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has yet to confirm whether the truck driver will face charges.

In the aftermath of the accident, parents were promptly informed by the school, with the district now reportedly facilitating reunification. The Austin-Travis County EMS confirmed via Twitter that the crash claimed the lives of a child and an adult. Additionally, four individuals were critically injured, while six others sustained potentially serious injuries.

The remaining passengers suffered minor injuries and were either transported to local medical facilities or a reunification center, officials stated. The adult fatality was a man in a vehicle trailing the bus, as per the Texas DPS.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook that "Highway 21 near the Caldwell/Bastrop county line is shut down due to a multiple fatality accident involving a school bus."

By 3:30 p.m., two helicopters had arrived to airlift four patients to local hospitals. Additional injured parties were also transported to local medical centers. Approximately an hour later, all those requiring medical attention had been evacuated from the scene, KXAN News reported.

The incident drew a response from Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who expressed his shock and sorrow on Twitter. "I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear about the school bus accident in Bastrop County today," he wrote. "Please join me in praying for these children, educators, and their families, especially those who have lost loved ones, during this difficult time."
